This book is in good condition with some soiling and rubbing of the covers; the spine has some fading on it; there is a little bit of oil stain inside the front cover; the page have a little bit of sun stain but the pages are readable, clean and tight, I did not see any writing on the pages. Contest includes: the first time I met Arthur Toscanini was in the spring of 1926. I was then music critic for the New York World, and I had been sent to Europe to report on musical events. In Paris, on day, I received a cablegram from my editor, Herbert Bayard Swope, telling me to go to Milan to investigate reported trouble between Toscanini and the fascists. Rumors had reached New York that Toscanini has refused to open his performance at La scala with fascist hymn and has severed his connection with the Milan opera house. Knowing Toscanini’s distaste for newspapermen, I took the precaution of obtain in a letter of introduction from a friend of his in New York. This letter, wrapped in a hundred-lire note, I presented to the concierge at Via Durni 20, the Maestro’s seventeenth-century house in the heart of Milan.
