This book is in good condition with some soiling and rubbing of the covers and spine, the corners are a little bit bumped, previous owner’s name is written inside, some pages have some writing on them but the pages are readable. Contest includes: Introduction. This book is a selection of passages from what all Englishmen consider by far the greatest biography in the world. We have in this generation very decidedly rebelled against many of the judgments, once so universally accepted, of Macaulay. The insults he heaped on Boswell now recoil upon himself. But his judgment of Boswell’s great work stands even firmer that when he first pronounced it. The lapse of something like a century since he wrote only leaves us surer than ever that, as a biographer, Boswell is first and has no second. He has distanced all his competitors so decidedly that it is not worth while to place them. Eclipse is first and the rest nowhere, and much, much more. This book does not have illustrations.
